Despite a dismal weather forecast The 2012 Waterloo Airshow saw two full days of flying. The pilots, ground crews and volunteers fought cool temperatures, high winds and low clouds to fill the sky with aircraft. |

Each day the Royal Canadian Air Cadets kicked off the flying with a glider launch and landing. The show opener was the 2012 Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Demo flown by Capt. Patrick "Paco" Gobeil. This was his first official airshow in Canada and he did a great job demonstrating the CF-18’s capabilities. The Canadian Armed Forces Skyhawks performed on Saturday only and jumped out of the RCAF’s newest aircraft, a recently delivered CC-130J Hercules. This was followed by a spirited CH-146 Griffon performance. |

Historic Canadian Aircraft included the always popular Jet Aircraft Museum’s “Mako” Shark flown by Ray Thwaites and Paul Briggs. From Vintage Wings of Canada, Paul Kissman flew a spirited aerobatic routine in the “Gray Ghost” Cosair dedicated to Robert Hampton Gray VC, DSC. The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association performed a great dedication to the Commonwealth Air Training Plan with the flypast of four Harvards. |

Civilian acts included Canada’s Red Bull Aerobatic and Race pilot Pete McLeod flying his Edge 540. Pete’s routine is an aggressive set of tumbling maneuvers that clearly demonstrates agility of the Edge. Otto the Helicopter, a Schweizer 300C helicopter flown by Roger Buis, was a great hit with the kids and adults. The act is divided between entertaining the kids and demonstrating the Schweizer’s performance. Roger swings a Yo-Yo under the helicopter, races around construction pylons knocking them over and picking them up and blows bubbles. Local pilot, Wayne Hadath, demonstrated his homebuilt F-1 Rocket which he flew to a first place finish in his class at the Air Venture Cup. |

The highlight for many was the Canadian Armed Forces Joint Forces Demonstration featuring a pair of CF-18 Hornets, a CH-146 helicopter and Bison armored vehicle. Adding to the excitement to the demonstration was April Zalesky’s AV8FX which provided explosions for the CF-18’s bomb runs and enemy fire. |

The Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds closed the show each day with a low-show due to the cloud base. |

A special thanks to the organizers and all volunteers who made the Waterloo Airshow a great experience. |
