Waterloo Central Railway’s steam engine No.9 was built in 1923 for the Essex Terminal Railway as a Standard 0-6-0 Alco Switcher Model S146. The engine was retired in 1962 and saved for preservation since it was one of the last steam engines working in Canada at the time. In 1997, after a lengthy restoration, it moved under its own power. |

The Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society began restoration of No.9 in 1994 at St. Thomas, On. In 2007, SOLRS moved its equipment to a new facility in St. Jacobs where No.9 and other engines run on a Waterloo Spur track from Kitchener to Elmira. |

When I was a kid in the 70s my father and I often chased steam engines around Ontario. We enjoyed the chase and catching the engines at different crossings. It was nice to relive those days chasing No.9 between Kitchener and Elmira. |
