Canadian aviation spotters in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver received a special treat when Heavy Metal band, Iron Maiden visited the cities with their specially marked tour plane named “Ed Force One”. For the Book of Souls World Tour the band chose a Boeing 747 as their tour aircraft. Even more interesting is Iron Maiden’s lead singer, Bruce Dickenson, is the pilot of the tour plane. In the 1990s, Dickenson gained his commercial pilots license with Astraeus, a British Airline where he flew the Boeing 757.

During 2007 – 2008, Bruce Dickenson flew an Astraeus owned Boeing 757 on their Somewhere Back In Time World Tour that was specially marked for the tour. At the time a contest was held to name the aircraft and fans came up with Ed Force One, Eddie being a character from their stage show.

For the Book of Souls Tour, a Boeing 747, leased from Air Atlantic Icelandic was chosen as the bands aircraft. This allowed Iron Maiden to carry all their crew and 12 tons of stage equipment to 35 countries around the world. The tour will see first time visits to several countries including China and El Salvador. Ed Force One suffered damaged during a towing incident in Chile and in 10 short days had its two port engines replaced and was back with the band for their North American leg.
