The day-long event, hosted by Shane Clayton and Shawn Wylie, was both entertaining and informative. Course coverage included aircraft fluids, electrical systems, walk around checks, passenger loading, health and safety and finished with a test.

Shane demonstrates how to safely hand crank the inertia starter on the Mk. II Harvard in the event of a dead battery.

Since it was a nice spring morning we did the walk around on “Bessy” sitting outside the hangar.

Over a dozen existing and new service crew members attended the event.

Before the walk around the magnetos, master switch and throttle are checked. Other components to watch for are the parking brake and control lock.

We then moved back into the restoration hangar for a walk around of the Tiger Moth.

Since the Tiger Moth has no battery external power is used or the propeller needs to be hand-propped to start the engine.

The next phase of training involved loading passengers. Here Shawn Wylie demonstrates with Shawn Newman how people love to grab the D ring on the parachute.

The day finished with Health and Safety training, ground handling of aircraft and a test. Volunteers need a passing mark of 85% or higher to graduate.

While the pilots and aircraft get all the glory it takes a dedicated group of volunteers to keep the Harvards in the air. The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association has a good pool of mechanics and volunteers who help keep the aircraft flying.
